What is a Tornado?

A tornado is a rapidly rotating column of air that smashes anything in itś way.

It picks up houses like they are nothing disintegrating in the air. It picks up cars

like they are toys. Paths through neighbourhoods turn to kindling. There is

nothing salvageable. It all happens with a blink of an eye.

Tornadoes can have a wide range of colours depending on the environment in which they form. Those that form in dry environments can be nearly invisible.

While travelling on a body of water Tornadoes can turn white or even blue.

Slow moving tornadoes ingest a considerable amount of debris and dirt.

They are normally darker.

Tornadoes on flat land can turn red because of the reddish tint of the soil.

Tornadoes in mountainous areas can travel over snow-covered ground

turning white.

Each year around sixty people is killed by tornadoes. In 2011 about 1,600

tornadoes hit the USA, causing more than $25 billion in damages. 

Tornadoes are dangerous and we need to look after ourselves. We can do this by getting under a sturdy piece of furniture.
